Thinking now about the branding of my product, it is important that the brand represents the product and conveys the message properly. Since my product was in security, I wanted to use a name that shows this. Also something to think about was the typeface and colour, so choosing them with the product in mind was important here.

Colour & Typography

When I think of security my mind naturally goes to black, so I knew that I wanted to incorporate black in this project and part of the brand identity. Playing around with some colour pairs I found that purple goes really well with black, and this would become the primary brand colour that would be used in CTA buttons. I then chose a dark grey for elements that sit above the background. With the black secondary and background colour, I thought that white would be the best fit. When it came to typography, I originally wanted something techy and futuristic, and trying out Logic Monospace and Forma DJR Mono for a bit I decided to just go for the simpler San Fransisco, which was more accessible, legible, and user friendly.

Coming up with a name

The first thing I done was wrote down all of the different words that I could think of that related to security. From there I would look up synonyms for these words, so that I could get as many down as possible. After I done that I knew that I wanted to use the word ‘Home’ in the name, so that it wasn’t too vague. Because of this I started matching this with other words. In the end I went with ‘HomeGuard’, as I think this name conveys the message of the product, and gives a sense of security and authority.

Logo

Next up was creating a logo and wordmark that would represent the product. This was very important as it needs to convey what the product is all about, so I must be intentional as to what elements I include. Looking into security, common icons that are used to show security are shields, locks, and a house, so I wanted to include one of these in the design. Playing around with the different icons I eventually decided to go for the shield, as I thought that it best represented what I was going for. On the right is the logo I settled on. I like it uses the brand colours and the typography fits the product, with it having a advanced and futuristic feel. The shield in the background communicates the safety aspect of the product.
