This is an area where I am going to be noting down some key points from the research I have been doing.

Cognitive Offloading -https://www.cell.com/trends/cognitive-sciences/fulltext/S1364-6613(16)30098-5?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS1364661316300985%3Fshowall%3Dtrue
- The use of physical action to alter the information processing requirements of a task so as to reduce cognitive demand.
- What mechanisms trigger cognitive offloading?
- What are the cognitive consequences of this behaviour?

Navigational Aids and Spatial Memory - https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13875868.2015.1059432?needAccess=true
- The use of navigational aids (GPS) decreases environmental engagement, mental effort and control, and spatial decision making.
- Using a navigational aid gets you to your destination quicker than not using one

Deskilling with AI https://dl.acm.org/doi/full/10.1145/3706599.3719931
- Deskilling happens when reliance on technological systems start to decrease existing skills or prevent skill development in people.
- ‘Automation surprises’ are when operators are caught off guard when the system behaves in a way that is unexpected
- Complacency can be induced, causing operators to become less vigilant

https://puirp.com/index.php/research/article/view/63/55
- Skills such as critical thinking, complex problem solving, and creativity risk deterioration because of technology
- 25% drop off in young people engaging in reading literature, debating in-person, solving puzzles, and writing creatively.

https://uxdesign.cc/the-cognitive-cost-of-convenience-e97083ed09b5
- Instead of eliminating all friction, interfaces should embrace progressive depth — starting simple but allowing users to gradually build competence (progressive disclosure)
- The goal shouldn’t be to eliminate all cognitive effort — only unnecessary friction
- We should design systems that encourage deeper engagement when needed
- Guide users toward understanding instead of just handing them solutions

https://medium.com/@aishdhumale16/relationship-between-efficiency-and-cognitive-load-in-ux-design-7487aa0bc357
- As designers we apply the concept that minimising cognitive load increases usability and efficiency, and the two are interlinked.
- Lower cognitive load leads to higher user satisfaction, and more enjoyable experiences
