In our first lecture we were given some guidance on what a dissertation is, some previous examples and some of Kyle’s own papers that he has written. We are encouraged to do something specific and something we have a genuine interest in or think is a problem in society.

Key Terms

Research proposal - this takes form in a 5-minute presentation with a written bibliography. It essentially says what we’re gonna write about.

Literature Review - Comprehensive summary and evaluation of what other people have written about your area using keywords in academic databases. Use general keywords and specific keywords.

Sources - Use a mix of journals, articles, books, websites. It is good to use mainly academic resources as they have standards and have been written and reviewed by experts

Dissertation Ideas

I particularly liked the idea of looking into how UX design impacts humans abilities to do everyday tasks. I asked Chat GPT to look into my idea further and find out areas that I should investigate to understand it better. It talked about a few keywords that I found quite interesting like cognitive offloading, skill atrophy, automation, convenience, and technology dependence. This was very helpful as it articulated my original idea into keywords that I can look up online, in databases and Google scholar.
