For our second project we had to create a poster fit for screen. We had to choose 1 of the articles from the Declaration of Human Rights, and create a poster that matches the manner of the text. We were asked to focus on the building blocks of design.
First I researched the articles and out of the 30 I looked at 4 and summarised them and what they meant to me.
Article 1 - All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. I think that this article is really important as it sets the standard for every single person that is born, which is that we are all equal, no matter what race, religion, height or hair colour. It also stresses the importance of treating each other as if we were brothers, instead of being enemies, we should be a brotherhood.
Article 3 - Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. I like this article as it gives everyone the right to life which is ultimately the most important thing. It also mentions liberty and security, meaning that people aren’t having to live life feeling afraid of their life being taken.
Article 18 - Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance. This article is very important as it means that people can practise their religion without being persecuted. This is great as it gives meaning to so many people and is something as a Christian I certainly take for granted.
Article 24 - Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay. This article stops people from being worked into the ground. Work-life balance is extremely important to ensure that people are staying mentally and physically healthy and not having to work their life way.
The Article that I have chosen is Article 1, as I think it sums up a lot of the other articles and if people treated people the way this article says they should then there wouldn’t be as much conflict as there is today. There is a reason why it is the first article and this is because it is one of the most important ones.
I then sketched some ideas for possible designs. I done three and I was happy enough with some of the possible designs. I wanted to take a few words from the article and make them large and the centre of the design, alongside the number 1, as it is article number 1.
I then went on to Figma to make a few designs. I first of all created 2 in black and white, figuring out what typeface I would use, what shapes I would use, and where I would place elements. Here are my two final black and white design that I would progress later with colour.
I like the bold, newspaper-like text of the left one, and how I used squares underneath each piece of text to make the text stand out more. The typeface I used was DM Serif Display. On the other hand the design on the right I think looks more aesthetic. I got rid of the brotherhood text, made the words larger and used the same typeface, but in italics, which I think gives a cool look. I also like how I almost created a logo with the Article 1 part, so I am happy with that.
I tried a couple different colour schemes, but the ones that looked the best were these ones. I found it hard to decide which colour scheme I liked the best, but I think the top ones represent the article well, with the rich red against the royal navy colour, and the white text just pops. I enjoyed trying different colour schemes and even added an alternative one with a white background, black text, but the same colours throughout.
