For our third project in IxD102 we had to write and design a web-essay, using either HTML and CSS or Framer, and I chose to build mine using HTML and CSS.

Writing the Essay/Research

The designer that I chose to write my essay about was Wolfgang Weingart, so I started by conducting some research, finding out about his background and his designs. I thought his work was really interesting and different, and after some research, I decided that my essay question would be: How did Wolfgang Weingart start a Typography Anarchy? I thought that this question was fitting for Wolfgang so I investigated him with this question in mind, and tried to tailor my research around it. For my research I used a range of websites, journals and books. Some notable ones are:

When it came to writing the essay I split it up into 3 sections. These were introduction, main body, and conclusion. Within the main body I had 5 different subheadings, which were: Background, Typographic Process Collection Nr.5, Layering Lithography, The Swiss Poster, and Didacta Eurodidac. The theme throughout the essay was how Wolfgang Weingart was rebellious with his design style, and how he was a pioneer for the ‘New Wave’ movement in the 70s, so throughout my essay, although I was looking at Wolfgang and his work, there was still a theme throughout which answers the original question, How did Wolfgang Weingart start a Typography Anarchy? To write the essay I used Microsoft Word as it is familiar to me.

Background - I looked at his upbringing, his studies and a short glimpse of his career as a whole.

Typographic Process Collection Nr.5 - I looked at one of his earliest pieces, and how it went against the Swiss Style rules.

Layering Lithography - I talked about his new direction in the 70s, and how this opened up a door for lots of new opportunities, and made his work more versatile.

The Swiss Poster - I looked into his piece ‘The Swiss Poster’, talked about some of the key characteristics of it, and how it was rebellious at the time.

Didacta Eurodidac - Finally, I talked about my favourite design of his, looking some aspects that I like about it, and how it especially differed from what was being designed at the time.

Sketches

In class we sketched some ideas for a layout for our webpage. One of the tasks we done was round robin where we had to sketch a design for our webpage, and then pass to the next person at the table for them to also sketch a design for you. We were in tables of four, so we each had to do 4 sketches, each one being a different persons sheet. Since my designer is Wolfgang Weingart, I tried to replicate his style by making it inconsistent and less structured. Here is my sketch and another sketch for my webpage, the left one being mine. I incorporated elements in both of these sketches in the next stage of the design process, such as the large title, and text that is vertical. Next up was creating the design in Figma.

Design Choices

The next part of the design process for the webpage was creating a design in Figma. In this stage I made the key design choices.
