After finding out that I wanted to take my product down the route of security, I wanted to find out more about what people are currently doing to keep their homes safe. I looked at a broad user but also targeted some research on those who are most likely to get broken into, which are wealthy individuals that have a lot of valuables in their home.
Here are som key burglary and home robbery statistics in the UK.

This article from the BBC talks about how a lot of celebrities in the likes of London and Manchester struggle with the high-risk of their homes being broke into. Because of this there has been some well-known celebrities who have been burgled in recent times. Some of these include David Beckham, Ashley Cole, and Molly-Mae. Because of the higher likelihood to be burgled, high-target individuals are employing more security measures to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. This includes manned security, guard dogs, panic rooms, and CCTV.
How do the rich and famous protect their homes?
This article by the Met Police gives tips and advice on how to deter possible burglars from coming into your home. A thing that burglars look for is valuables through open windows or doors. This means that closing blinds and curtains at night, as well as turning off lights will help prevent burglars from having their sights on valuables. They also look for quiet neighbourhoods, where they are less likely to be seen or spotted by a neighbour or onlooker. Another thing they look for is cars and motorbikes that are desirable for them to steal, and they know that the keys are most likely in the home and beside the front door. This can be tackled by ensuring that valuable cars are hidden in a garage or covered in some way. It is also proven that burglars will return to the same home that they have already burgled, and this is because many people don’t upgrade or enhance security.
Seven facts about residential burglary | Crime Prevention
From what I have found from my research, it is evident that there isn’t a way to stop burglars from trying to rob a house. What is true though is that there are plenty of measures that can be taken to ensure that they can’t get into the house, unless they use force. Because most burglars aren’t through forced entry, keeping doors and windows shut and locked is essential. There are plenty of other aspects that play into whether a burglar will target a house or not, and checking these off will decrease the likelihood of it happening. I think the direction I want to go in is some sort of security checklist and detection product, that will help the user to secure their home properly.
