With my app coming together, I decided it would be a good time to do a usability test and see if there are any iterative improvements that can be made to enhance user experience. I sat down with my brother James and conducted a usability test with him. It took around 15 mins altogether. The scenario that I gave him was that he was doing an evening check of his house, and to complete the ‘Doors’ checklist.

Notes

Was able to navigate onboarding using CTA buttons

Thought the information on the second onboarding screen was helpful to learn more about the app

Used checklist section on the home page to navigate to checklists instead of the navigation bar

Didn’t read the description, just went straight to checklist

Was able to check off the list successfully

Appreciated the feedback to confirm he completed it successfully.

Review & Changes

Overall I was very pleased with how this usability test went. James was able to get the task done without any issues, and asking some questions after I was able to find out why he thought the user experience was enjoyable. He said that having consistent colour with the purple throughout helped him know where to look for key actions. I also asked him why he didn’t read the description in the checklist section on the home page, and he said that he knew what a checklist was and so he didn’t bother reading it. Instead I went for a short heading that was more of a call to action instead of a description. This was a good improvement to me and I was glad that James pointed this out. This was very useful information and was the only real change that I made from this usability test. Overall the test was very useful and gave me confidence that my design is usable.
