In todays class we learnt about Point, Line and Plane. Point, Line and Plane are the basic building blocks when it comes to design. It is commonly used for images, icons, textures, diagrams and typography when in the early design stages. Although it looks simple, it is fundamental for creating complex designs, and when designs are stripped to the minimum, point, line and plane are clearly seen.
Points are classified as visible or perceivable marks or dots. Here are some Figma designs using only points, I tried to use these points to show different things such as dominance, symmetry, and unity.
A line is a mark that is mostly seen by it’s length and is almost like a ‘point in motion’. I used Figma to use lines in different widths and lengths to create designs that show seperation, continuation, and tried to use the most out of the negative space.
Planes are basically lines that clearly have more that 1 dimension. They have both length and width, and appear to us as shapes. In Figma I created designs using planes to make layouts, and cool designs only using black, white and grey squares.
Here are some examples of Point, line, plane that I have seen in real life:
Todays class was really helpful as I learnt that basics of design, which is point, line and plane. I think it’s cool how so much design when drawn back to the basics, is covered by point, line and plane.
