In todays class we had a short lecture on infographics. We thought about how in todays generation we don’t really read books anymore, but instead we prefer visual data such as photos and art. Infographics connect words and imagery together. An infographic is simply a visual form of conveying information.
Infographics should serve the purpose of displaying data. The data needs to be correct, honest, and straight to the point. The data should be sound, and ethically designers need to ensure that they are always telling the truth, and not being manipulative within our designs.
Infographics should also look fantastic. This is something that isn’t as important as utility, as the ultimate purpose is to display data. We shouldn’t get too caught up in using illustration and images when creating infographics, as it takes the focus away from the data and can be distracting and confusing.
We were then given a list for the process of creating infographics. This was really helpful and I think that I will use this in the future as a check list for when I am creating infographics.
Process your data
Check your sources
Create a wireframe
Format with a purpose
Have a story
Set the tone
Consider type
Control Colour
Utilise white space
Take a step back
Beware of TMI
Proof read
Test
Make revisions
Although todays lecture was quite short, it was helpful to learn a bit more about infographics and how they are used with a purpose, which is to show data clearly. The checklist that we were given I think will be super beneficial to come back to when I am creating infographics in the future.
