In todays class we looked at designing for AR and VR. Ronan took this class and he guided us through how to design for it. We mostly focused on designing for prototyping, and creating quick mockups for it.

Why Prototype?

As designers there are two reasons why we prototype. This is to demonstrate, and to test. We shouldn’t get caught up in prototyping to make things look cool, but instead show how it will work, and to test if it works. For AR and VR we prototype to see our UI screens, and also think about the environment and the space that our designs will be placed in. It is also important to think about the medium of interaction, like headsets, glasses, phone. The visual setting such as HDRIs, skyboxes, or panoramas.

Experimenting with VR

We then done a practise mockup of what VR looks like for us to take our designs onto a mockup of VR. Using a Figma plugin called Draft XR, we got the chance to see what it is like to get our designs from being flat on Figma to a VR headset. It was quite cool to put on one of these headsets and actually see what it would be like to use them as part of daily life. What I found interesting was that interacting with the interface was just as easy and intuitive as using a normal mobile phone or iPad.
