This was the biggest shift in the design world since the Bauhaus, which started in the 1920s. This was now 1970, so it had been a long time since something as influential as the Bauhaus happened. Postmodernism is historically seen as a punk era, and designers were being very experimental, breaking the design rules that had been in place for so long.
Wolfgang Weingart pioneered New Wave style, which was a progression of Swiss Style. Some things he did differently than Swiss style is he used less structure, punky typefaces, and broke some typography rules like how legible and readable designs had to be, and he done this by using inconsistent letter spacing, typeface choices etc. His work is very chaotic, but it still works. He wanted to move away from the orthodoxy of Swiss style. For these pieces he used offset lithography, which was a big hit for him. It amazes me that these were not done digitally.
Postmodernism was massive in Britain. Design and music were interlinked with each other, with elements from both influencing each other. Postmodernism style art was often used for music album covers, which brought a lot of people into the design world that would never cared for it. Here are some album covers that use Postmodernism in their design. Although it was used over all genres of music, it was especially used in Punk music, which fits the theme perfectly, as it also gets it’s name from breaking music norms and is very chaotic, not sure I’m a fan of it as I think it looks tacky(which I guess is what their going for).
David Carson is a graphic designer from Texas. His unconventional and experimental design style revolutionised the design world in America during 1990s. He is most famous for never going to art college. He didn’t care what other people thought of his work, which gave him freedom to do whatever he wanted with his designs. I really like his designs for skateboarding, surfing snowboarding articles he done.
I found todays class quite interesting as this was a totally new style than what we learnt about last week, which was International Style. Todays class was also helpful as my Project 03 Web Essay is about Wolfgang Weingart, so I learnt a lot that I can apply to that. I like how this movement broke all the barriers of design and opened up the opportunity for designers to do whatever they wanted with their work, which I’m sure was refreshing for designers after so long of design being rules and principles that they had to follow.
